Where Can You Read Lovecraft for Free?

Filed under: Field reference  ·  Free edition on file

This Archive carries a record of every chronicle on file and not the chronicle itself, so the question of where to read the text comes up often. The free route on this office's list is the Standard Ebooks edition, Short Fiction, by H. P. Lovecraft: a carefully typeset digital edition built from public-domain texts, with no purchase, no region restriction and no storefront to choose between. It is available here.

One caution, which this office would rather state than leave to be found out. The Archive cannot confirm that every one of the 50 chronicles on file appears in that compiled edition. It covers the great majority, and it costs nothing to check the contents page before downloading.

Why the free texts are free

The older chronicles are out of copyright, and the dates matter: the chronicles first published before 1930 are clear in the United States, and all of them are clear in the United Kingdom and the European Union. The Dispatch on the public domain sets the dates out and lists the 35 that fall inside the US cut-off.

Where to begin

A free edition has no guide in it. The Dispatch on reading order gives an intake sequence for a first-time reader, from the clearest statement of the premise to the longest and densest chronicle, and every chronicle named there can be found in the free edition.

If you would rather have a book

The Field Reference Library lists the printed editions chronicle by chronicle, so a reader can see which chronicles each one contains before buying. The libraries on this office's list lend the three Penguin Classics volumes as a matter of course.
