A solitary, wealthy dreamer whose childhood fixation on his family's sealed ancestral tomb deepened, over months of nightly visits, into a full change of manner, speech, and apparent memory — as though someone considerably older had started using his body to finish unfinished business. He is presently confined to an asylum; the tomb's alcove, once opened, was found to hold an empty coffin inscribed only 'Jervas,' and a portrait that could pass for his own.
