Locality · Ruined ancestral homestead, rural Massachusetts
The Carter Farmhouse Ruins
The abandoned homestead Randolph Carter drove to the night he vanished, carrying an ancestral silver key and nothing else. Only the car and an empty carved box were ever recovered from the site.
Whereabouts: A ruined eighteenth-century farmhouse in the hill country outside Arkham, Massachusetts, on land Randolph Carter's ancestors worked for generations.
Access: By automobile from Boston, along back roads Carter alone still seemed to remember correctly; the ruins themselves are reached on foot from where the road gives out.
