Necronomicon: Book of the Dead (1993)

Filed here for its wraparound segment, 'The Library,' credited on release as drawn from this chronicle. What actually made it to screen bears almost no resemblance to the original case — a monastery vault, water-dwelling creatures beneath it, monks who are not what they appear to be — retaining essentially nothing but the premise of something inhuman living in the walls of an old building. Stranger than the rewrite itself: the production casts a version of the correspondent whose name sits on the case file's own byline as an on-screen character, breaking into the vault to steal the very book this Archive keeps under lock. No note on file explains why, of every device available, this was the one chosen.
