The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

An invented account of a ritual sacrifice staged to appease something enormous and ancient sleeping beneath the earth, its arrival in the final reel unmistakably in this Archive's own register despite never being named on screen. The resemblance is widely discussed by critics and academics; neither the director nor the credited writers have gone on record naming this Archive's subject matter as a source for any of it. Completed in 2009 and held back for nearly three years by a distributor's bankruptcy before release — the kind of delay this Archive is inclined to notice without further comment. Filed pending further review rather than as a settled call.
