The Blasted Heath

Ground poisoned by whatever a meteorite deposited in it, still visibly wrong years after every trace of the meteorite itself had vanished. The soon-to-be-flooded reservoir site was meant to bury the whole story along with the heath.

Whereabouts: The Gardner family's former farm, west of Arkham, Massachusetts, a five-acre stretch now bare of anything that will grow.

Access: By ordinary road; the surveyor who narrates the story arrives on a routine scouting trip ahead of a planned reservoir, with no idea at first why the locals refuse to give him directions.
