The Shunned House, Benefit Street

An address with an unusually high tenant turnover, all of it attributable — once somebody finally dug far enough down — to what has been growing in the cellar since well before the house itself was built.

Whereabouts: A house on Benefit Street in Providence, Rhode Island, notable mainly for how briefly anyone manages to live in it.

Access: By ordinary occupancy or, in the narrator's case, by simply owning the deed and staying the night on purpose to find out why nobody else could.
