Which Lovecraft Places Are Real?

Filed under: Locality verification  ·  Status: VERIFIED (12 places)

Twelve localities on file carry the VERIFIED stamp: ordinary places that can be found on a modern map, some to the address. A further group, the New England towns, are filed SUPPRESSED because the maps have lost them; for those the Archive offers a reconciliation with the real town that stands on the same ground. The two groups are given below, with the basis of each pin.

Filed VERIFIED

  • The Shunned House, Providence. 135 Benefit Street, still standing as a private home.
  • Crawford Tillinghast's house, Providence. Set back from Benevolent Street, confirmed against the text.
  • The Free-Will Church, Federal Hill, Providence. Usually reconciled with St John's Church on Atwells Avenue, demolished in 1992.
  • Curwen's farmhouse, Pawtuxet. In Pawtuxet village, south of Providence; the pin is region-level.
  • Pickman's studio, Boston. In the North End near Copp's Hill. The Survey pins the neighbourhood, not a house.
  • The rooming house, West 14th Street, Manhattan. A surveyed street.
  • Red Hook, Brooklyn. A named Brooklyn neighbourhood.
  • Akeley Farm, Vermont. In Windham County, near Townshend and Brattleboro.
  • Exham Priory, England. Stamped VERIFIED but charted as a conjecture, in the Severn borderland south of Gloucester and north-east of Bristol.
  • The Tower Studio, Kent. Rural Kent, pinned as a region.
  • A churchyard, the Netherlands. Region only; the account gives no town.
  • Mount Maenalus, Arcadia. A mountain in the Peloponnese, Greece.

Reconciled with a real town

  • Arkham is usually equated with Salem, Essex County.
  • Kingsport with Marblehead.
  • Innsmouth with Newburyport, on the coast between that town and Arkham.
  • Dunwich has no settled reconciliation; the Survey shades a zone in north-central Massachusetts, off the Aylesbury pike.

A reconciliation records which surviving town stands where the suppressed one is said to stand. It does not claim they are the same town. For Providence in detail see the Dispatch on its localities; for the places that cannot be found at all, see the one on the UNLOCATABLE stamp.
