Evil Dead (1981)

An invented account — five students, a remote cabin, a tape recording that should have stayed unplayed — with no chronicle behind it. What earns it a place here is the shape rather than any specific name: something ancient in the woods, roused by the reading aloud of a forbidden text bound in what the props department calls skin, and indifferent afterward to who it wears once it's in the room. The book itself isn't yet called what it becomes in this Archive's next entry (see Evil Dead II, 1987) — filed at the same general remove as the section's other tone-only occurrences, on the strength of the shape alone rather than a named borrowing.
