Where Is Innsmouth on a Map?

Filed under: Locality verification  ·  Status: SUPPRESSED

Innsmouth lies on the Massachusetts coast between Newburyport and Arkham. The surviving town it is usually reconciled with is Newburyport, the old shipping port at the mouth of the Merrimack River near the New Hampshire line, and it is Newburyport where the one full account of Innsmouth begins. The Field Survey pins Innsmouth at a reconciled position on that stretch of coast, a few miles south of Newburyport and about sixteen miles up the shore from the Arkham pin.

Whether Innsmouth is real, and why no atlas shows it, is answered in a separate Dispatch. This one is only about the chart.

How the witness gets there

The chronicle gives enough route to place the town without a latitude. The witness begins at Newburyport, where he is pointed to a battered bus driven by a man of Innsmouth stock; it is the town's only scheduled way in. His escape runs inland along the old railway line toward Rowley, and on through Ipswich to Arkham. The waterfront looks out toward Devil Reef, the long black line of rock about a mile and a half offshore from which the Deep Ones come and go.

Why not a more exact pin

A suppressed town cannot be given an honest street address; no surviving record would bear it out. The Newburyport reconciliation fits the geography and the decayed shipping-port character, and the Archive records it as the usual one, not the proven one. Other North Shore ports have been argued for. The pin therefore carries a reconciled mark, not an exact one.

Open Innsmouth on the interactive map and the Arkham coast preset will show it in context: Arkham and Kingsport to the south, Newburyport to the north, and the open Atlantic where the reef lies.
