A Churchyard, Holland
The grave of a low, reputedly ghoulish figure buried five centuries earlier with a jade amulet the two narrators cannot resist taking. The amulet leaves the churchyard with them; whatever was guarding it does too.
Whereabouts: A five-hundred-year-old graveyard in an unnamed part of the Netherlands, chosen by two grave-robbers specifically for the age and reputation of its occupant.
Access: By international travel undertaken purely for the thrill of it — the narrator and his companion St. John treat grave-robbing as a hobby and Holland as simply the next stop on the itinerary.
