Locality · New York City waterfront district

Red Hook, Brooklyn

Status: VERIFIED

Red Hook, Brooklyn

A crowded immigrant waterfront district that hosted, for a period, a wealthy recluse's basement congregation and the disappearances that came with it. The building at the center of the case has since collapsed, but the Archive's account of the case explicitly declines to call the matter closed.

Whereabouts: A dense, poor waterfront neighborhood on the western edge of Brooklyn, New York — an ordinary, mapped part of an ordinary city, unlike most addresses in this archive.

Access: By any ordinary means of reaching Brooklyn; nothing about the neighborhood itself restricts entry, which the Archive considers the more unsettling detail rather than the less.
