Dagon
A torpedoed sailor escapes his captors in an open boat and wakes stranded on a reeking expanse of seafloor heaved up overnight by some volcanic upheaval. Crossing it toward a black monolith carved with images no human hand made, he watches something enormous rise from the water to embrace the stone — and spends the rest of his life, and his morphine supply, trying to forget having seen it.
