The Whisperer in Darkness

After Vermont floods wash strange carcasses out of the hills, a folklorist begins corresponding with a reclusive farmer who claims to have recorded the buzzing, wasp-like voices of something in the woods. The correspondence turns stranger as the farmer's letters start to describe an offer he's been made — and then abruptly change tone.
