Who Are the Mi-Go?

Filed under: Species  ·  Moderate — abduction / experimentation

The Mi-Go are an extraterrestrial species, crab-like and fungoid, that fly between worlds on membranous wings and mine rare minerals from the more remote mountain ranges of the Earth. The Archive files them under their other names as the Outer Ones and the Fungi from Yuggoth, Yuggoth being the world they are said to come from; the witnesses identify it with the outermost planet.

What they do

The feature of the dossier that settles most inquiries is the cylinder. A Mi-Go can surgically remove a living brain and keep it alive indefinitely in a cylinder. They present this to cooperative humans, not always honestly, as a form of interstellar travel: the brain goes and sees the worlds, and the body stays behind. The account that records them is the record of a man who was offered it.

Where they were met

The setting is Akeley Farm, an isolated farmhouse in the wooded hills of Windham County, Vermont, well beyond where the winter road is kept. Henry Akeley had wired the house to record the buzzing voices he heard coming from the hills at night. Albert Wilmarth, an instructor at Miskatonic University, travelled up to see the evidence at his host's own invitation. What waits in the hills, and in the cylinder-chair in Akeley's own study, makes the farm considerably harder to leave than to reach.

The locality is stamped VERIFIED: it is an ordinary farm in an ordinary county, and the Field Survey pins it in Windham County, near Townshend and Brattleboro. The chronicle was filmed in 2011 as a period production in the manner of the 1930s, kept close to the account.
