Where Is Kingsport, Massachusetts, on a Map?

Filed under: Locality verification  ·  Status: SUPPRESSED

Kingsport is the old harbour town on the Massachusetts North Shore, and the surviving town it is usually reconciled with is Marblehead, the steep-streeted colonial harbour just east of Salem. The Field Survey pins Kingsport at a reconciled position on Marblehead, a few miles from the Arkham pin. The closeness matches the accounts, which treat Kingsport as the sea-facing town and Arkham as the one on the river.

Why Marblehead

The chronicles describe narrow, climbing streets, ancient gambrel roofs, a hilltop burying ground, and cliffs above a working harbour. That fits Marblehead closely, and Lovecraft is on record as having thought highly of the real town. The Archive treats the reconciliation as the standard reading, not a settled one.

Where it appears

Kingsport is where the witness of The Festival returns for an old family rite at the winter solstice and descends into the vaults beneath the hill, and where three thieves go to the hermit's house on Water Street in The Terrible Old Man. North of the town, a cliff carries the house of The Strange High House in the Mist. In the Archive's scheme that last locality shades toward the Dreamlands, which is why its pin and its record carry a different status from Kingsport proper.

On the interactive map Kingsport sits in the same cluster as Arkham, so the Arkham coast preset is the quickest way to see them side by side.
