What Creatures Live in the Dreamlands?
The Dreamlands are entered in sleep, and the accounts that describe them agree on one point: the inhabitants are not all hostile, and the ones that are can be told apart by where they are found. The register below is the Archive's, taken from the dossiers for The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, which is the chronicle that meets nearly all of them. For the place itself, see the Dispatch on the Dreamlands.
On the road from Ulthar
- The Cats of Ulthar. The cats of a village beyond the river Skai, protected by a law against killing them that the village has never moved to repeal. They vanish and return together, and in the Dream-Quest they are the force that defeated the moon-beasts in a single night.
- The Zoogs. A furtive, fungus-eating people of the Enchanted Wood who speak in murmurs and rustling. Low as individuals, high in numbers, and on the losing side of both of their engagements with the cats.
Below ground
- The Gugs. Twenty-foot giants with vertical mouths, confined to a buried city below the Enchanted Wood by trapdoors too heavy for any of them to lift. Filed as severe.
- The Ghasts. Pale, kangaroo-limbed scavengers of the Vale of Pnath, without nose or forehead, who hunt in packs and have brought down a gug sentry twenty times their size.
- Ghouls. Canine-faced, rubbery-skinned scavengers who pass freely through gug country on the way to better hunting below, and who in this chronicle deal with Carter on terms.
In the air and on the moon
- The Night-gaunts. Faceless, black, rubber-winged creatures that seize dreamers who wander too far and carry them off without harm. The common view is that they serve Nyarlathotep; the Archive's reading of the record is that they serve Nodens.
- The Moon-beasts. Grey, amorphous, toad-like slavers who run the black galleys to the far side of the moon, crewed by a near-human labour force too broken to be trusted with arms.
What is not listed
The gods of the Dreamlands, Nodens and Nyarlathotep among them, have dossiers of their own, and so do some of the places. The register above is of the creatures, which the Archive treats as a separate matter.
