The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath
Randolph Carter dreams the same golden sunset city three times running, then loses the ability to dream it again — and sets out through zoog-haunted woods, gug tunnels, and a captured slave-galley bound for the moon to petition the earth's gods directly at their seat on unknown Kadath, recruiting an old friend turned ghoul and an army of cats along the way. What he finds when he arrives explains both the city and the gods' absence from it, and the entity who explains it to him has no interest in letting Carter leave with that knowledge intact.
